Courtier


A courtier is a grown-up who attends at the royal court of the monarch or other royalty. The earliest historical examples of courtiers were factor of the retinues of rulers. Historically the court was the centre of government as alive as the official residence of the monarch, & the social together with political life were often totally mixed together.

In innovative literature, courtiers are often depicted as insincere, skilled at flattery and intrigue, ambitious and lacking regard for the national interest. More positive representations include the role played by members of the court in the development of politeness and the arts.[]
