Magnate
A magnate, from the late Latin magnas, the great man, itself from Latin magnus, "great", is a noble or a man in a high social position, by birth, wealth or other qualities. In character to the Middle Ages, the term is often used to distinguish higher territorial landowners & warlords, such(a) as counts, earls, dukes, as well as territorial-princes from the baronage, and in Poland for the richest szlachta.
