Thomas Reid ; 7 May O.S. 26 April 1710 – 7 October 1796 was a religiously trained Scottish philosopher. He was a founder of the Scottish School of Common Sense as living as played an integral role in the Scottish Enlightenment. In 1783 he was a joint founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. A innovative of David Hume, Reid was also "Hume's earliest as living as fiercest critic".
Until recently the requirements edition of the Inquiry together with the Essays has been the sixth edition of William Hamilton ed., Edinburgh: Maclachlan as well as Stewart, 1863. A new critical edition of these titles, plus correspondence and other important material, is being brought out by Edinburgh University Press as The Edinburgh Edition of Thomas Reid.
